Michael Jackson brings America's debut single back to life

Later this year, if all goes as planned, a posthumous CD by the late Michael Jackson will include a song called "A Place with No Name." The track will feature Jackson's plaintive voice singing wistful lyrics about "plants and birds and rocks and things."

If those words sound familiar, it's no coincidence; the song is Jackson's re-write of "A Horse with No Name," the 1972 debut single from the band America. The fact that Jackson thought enough of the original to rework it is a compliment that still surprises Dewey Bunnell, the man who wrote the song.

"I had heard about it a couple of years ago, before Michael passed," Bunnell says. "After his death, I forgot about it. Now it seems the song will come out this year, and the credits will read 'Michael Jackson and Dewey Bunnell.' It's pretty amazing."

A new Michael Jackson album will hit stores in November 2010, according to a post on a Michael Jackson message board attributed to "a source at Sony." The new Michael Jackson album would not be a greatest hits package, but rather a completely new collection of unreleased material, possibly including a highly-anticipated collaboration between the King of Pop and rocker Lenny Kravitz.

A post on the MJJ Community message board quotes "a source at Sony USA" as the source of the rumors. According to the source, the album of 10-12 new tracks will hit stores just before Thanksgiving 2010.

Whether the rumors are true, of course, is a matter for debate. But, for Michael Jackson's millions of fans worldwide, just a rumor of new music from the King of Pop is enough to get excited about.

According to the post, the source says the tracklist for the new Michael Jackson album is not finalized, but it may contain several highly-anticipated unreleased tracks, including "Another Day," a collaboration between Jackson and Lenny Kravitz. A portion of "Another Day" leaked several months ago, and Kravitz responded by posting a video clip on YouTube stating his desire to see the song have a proper release.

Another rumored track on the new Michael Jackson album is "Hold My Hand," a duet with Akon that leaked online in 2008. Other possible songs include collaborations with T-Pain and will.i.am, and a song Jackson wrote for Hurricane Katrina victims in 2006.

If the rumors are true, the new Michael Jackson album could revive the slumping music business.

The message board post quotes the Sony source as saying that the new album will be given full promotion, including music videos and a large-scale marketing campaign with print and online advertisements.

The King of Pop's untimely death in June 2009 helped revive the sluggish music industry, and a new Michael Jackson album could have the same effect. Only time will tell if the rumors of a new Michael Jackson album turn out to be true, but all of his fans certainly hope so.

Exclusive: New Michael Jackson Album In November
Disc includes 10 previously unreleased tracks

An all-new Michael Jackson collection featuring 10 unreleased songs will be released this November, a rep for the Jackson estate exclusively tells Rolling Stone. At the time of his death Jackson reportedly left hard drives filled with unheard music, much of it recorded during the King of Pop's '80s peak. Jackson's manager Frank DiLeo told RS that he estimates that Jackson's vaults contain more than 100 completed and unreleased songs, including collaborations with Akon, Will.i.am and Ne-Yo. "There are a couple of songs we recorded for the Bad album that we had to cut that are just sensational," DiLeo said.

"Every time that [Jackson] recorded, he over-recorded. He would record anywhere from 20 to 30 songs for each album," former Sony Music CEO Tommy Mottola told RS last year. Any of them could have been as big a hit as the ones that came out." One of the most noteworthy tracks was a Thriller outtake titled "Don't Be Messin' Around." Other candidates include any of the reported five songs that Jackson recorded with Will.i.am.

Last year, a pair of unreleased Jackson tracks, "Another Day" and "A Place With No Name," leaked, and recently Rodney Jerkins, who co-produced Jackson's 2001 album Invincible, revealed to VladTV that he's currently working on the collection.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the album of never-before-heard Jackson songs will be the first in a 10-project, seven-year deal the Jackson estate inked with Sony Music in March 2010 — a $250 million pact that will also include reissues of Jackson's classic albums, new greatest hits sets, a DVD collection of all Michael's music videos and possibly a Cirque du Soleil show. The hybrid karaoke and dance simulator Michael Jackson: The Video Game is also expected out by the end of 2010.

10 ennenkuulematonta biisiä ovat peräisin pitkältä aikaväliltä: aina 80-luvulta vuoteen 2006 asti, jolloin Jackson levytti Black Eyed Peas -yhteen will.i.amin kanssa.

Jackson kuoli 25. kesäkuuta 2009.

Rolling Stone -lehden mukaan Jackson jätti jälkeensä kovalevyjä täynnä julkaisematonta musiikkia.

Laulajan manageri Frank DiLeo on puolestaan kertonut, että Jacksonin holveista löytyy yli sata valmista mutta julkaisematonta biisiä. Mukana on yhteiskappaleita Akonin ja Ne-Yon kanssa.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) - Songs that didn't make the cut on Michael Jackson albums while he was alive and some forgotten recordings left behind on computer hard drives will be on an album released this fall, sources familiar with the project say.

Jackie Jackson, one of the singer's older brothers, has been working in a studio to help prepare the album, which will include 10 previously unheard songs, according to Jackson estate spokesman Jim Bates.

Jackson's estate and Sony Music announced in March that his next album of unreleased music will go on sale in November. Music producer Rodney Jerkins, who co-produced Jackson's 2001 album "Invincible," has been working with Sony to put together the new album, a source familiar with the project said. The source asked not to be identified because he was not authorized by the record label to disclose details.

John McClain, one of the two men named in Jackson's will to be executors of his estate, is also working on the album with Jackie Jackson, Bates said. McClain owns a recording studio in Hollywood.

Jackson was known to rent out Los Angeles recording studios for weeks at a time for creative sessions, sometimes alone and sometimes with other well-known artists.

A producer told CNN that he was surprised to find a large cache of forgotten Michael Jackson music files stored on a hard drive at a Hollywood studio in the months after Jackson's June 25, 2009, death. When he turned the recording device on to start a session, he heard Jackson singing "Hot Fun in the Summertime." The 1969 hit by Sly & the Family Stone is part of an extensive music catalogue that Jackson bought. The producer said he made a backup copy of the 40 gigabytes of Jackson music and turned it over to one of the Jackson estate administrators. He asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Another computer hard drive with music was found in Jackson's rented mansion in the days after his death, Bates said. A Jackson family member later handed the hard drive over to the estate administrators, he said. It was not clear if any of that music will be included in the upcoming project, but Sony's Columbia Records has a contract with Jackson's estate for 10 albums of unreleased material over the next seven years.

Uunituoreiden musiikkitietojen mukaan uusi Michael Jackson -albumi ilmestyy ensi syksyn aikana, mutta projekti on saanut jo nyt vaikutusvaltaisia vastustajia.

Black Eyed Peas -menestyspoppoon nokkamies will.i.am ei omien sanojensa mukaan voi sietää ajatusta uudesta Jackson-levystä. Tuottajanakin kunnostautunut räppäri totesi antamassaan haastattelussa, ettei levyn pitäisi koskaan ilmestyä. Will.i.amin mukaan Jackson oli perfektionisti, joten hän ei usko, että Jacko olisi koskaan antanut siunaustaan levylle.

^ Todennäköisesti MJ ei itse antaisikaan siunaustaan levyn julkaisemiselle, mutta MJ:n mielipidettä ei nyt sattuneesta syystä kysytä. Mun mielestä will.i.am mussuttaa joka tapauksessa ihan turhaan. Tietenkin jos julkaistavat biisit kuulostavat selkeästi keskeneräisiltä ja jotenkin puutteellisilta, niin sitten kyllä ymmärrän tuon "pelkkää rahastusta" -argumentin. Mutta se jää nähtäväksi tai kuultavaksi. Mutta kun on tiedossa, että MJ:ltä jäi useita valmiita biiseitä julkaisematta, niin kyllä ne mun mielestä ansaitsee nähdä päivänvalon. Uskon kuitenkin, että vielä julkaisemattomien biisien joukossa on todellisia helmiäkin.

Herra voisi olla ihan hiljaa, ettei kenenkään tarvitse muistuttaa sitä niistä hirvittävistä Thriller-remixeistä.

Jos Will.I.Am ei halua omia tuotoksiaan, joita on tehnyt Michaelin kanssa julkaistavan, fine pitäköön itsellään, mutta mitä se sille kuuluu mitä muut tekee. On niitä muitakin, jotka tietää Michaelin työtavasta ja mitä Michaelin mahdollisesti haluisi ja mitä ei. Ei Will.I.Am ole ainoa tuottaja ja musiikkialan ihminen, jonka kanssa Michael on työskennellyt.

Lueskelin tossa muiden mietteitä tuosta Will.I.Amin uuden albumin vastustamisesta ja niinhän se menee, että onkohan Will.I.Am sitten valmis maksamaan velat, joita Michaelilla on edelleenkin? Kyseessä kun ei edes ole mikään pikkusumma. Samalla kun ihmiset miettii uuden levyn boikotoimista sen takia, että Sony olisi vain rahastamassa Michaelin nimellä eikä Michael mahdollisesti olisi halunnut biisejä julkaistavan niin tuleekohan niille mieleen laisinkaan Michaelin lapset, jotka kuitenkin saavat osansa levytuotoista? Ei levyn ostamatta jättäminen Sonyn kokoista firmaa mihinkään kaataisi, mutta se voi tulevaisuudessa vaikuttaa Michaelin lapsiin.
