Elvis On Tour julkaistaan DVD:llä ja Blu-Raylla

Warner on puolestaan antanut selvityksen aiheesta. Uskomatonta, jos todella on niin, että Berryn laulunjulkaisijaan ei saatu mitään yhteyttä...

As soon that the fan world learned that ‘Johny B Goode’ was replaced by ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ on the opening credits of ‘Elvis On Tour’, hundreds of reactions where written on various message boards. Lots of fans are blaming Warner or EPE (who don’t even own the On Tour footage) for not doing a good job on this release. ElvisMatters contacted Tom Lucas, VP Marketing manager of Warner USA, and asked for an explanation. The moment Warner decided to release a restored version for ‘Elvis On Tour’, they contacted all the composers and publishers for the songs that are included in the movie. In case of ‘Johny B Goode’, they never received any reaction from composer Chuck Burry or his publisher. Warner tried to contact them for a very long time, but never received any reply or contract. It is not the case that Warner did not want to pay enough money to include the song, they simply did not receive an offer to pay for it. Warner had two options left: forget the whole project and put it back in the vault, or release it with another intro. The fact that they choose ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ and the editing that was used on it, is food for another discussion. Although the opening (only 87sec!) is altered, we still are very happy that we can enjoy the rest of the movie in great quality!

Tuskin. Tokkopa Berryltä itseltään mitään on kysytty. Nämä pyynnöthän kulkevat laulunjulkaisufirmojen kautta. Myönsihän Berryn firma lisenssin Johnnyn B. Gooden käyttöön Aloha-dvd-julkaisulla muutama vuosi takaperin. Luulisi rahan kelpaavan Berryllekin. Jos tarina on tosi niin ongelman täytyy olla laulun oikeuksia hallinoivan julkaisufirman organisaatiossa, kun eivät ole vaivautuneet tekemään tarjousta. Berryn kannattaisi harkita julkaisijan vaihtoa, jos ovat noin tumpeloita.

Ystäväni näki elokuvan, ja kirjoitti siitä näin:

"Okay, I went to the movie tonight to see "ELVIS ON TOUR". I LOVED IT!!! I know a lot of people got bent out of shape about not having "Johnny B. Goode" in the opening sequence, but to be honest, that didn't bother me a bit. I mean, things are always changed. Look what they did with all the different versions of TTWII - they even took out "Suspicious Minds" in one version. It was so great to see Elvis on the big screen again. Our theater was not sold out, but there was a very respectable crowd. And an appreciative crowd. The cutest thing - when we were leaving, we were behind a family with 3 little boys, probably all under 10 - in their jumpsuits and Elvis wigs and sunglasses.

The best thing (other than watching his pure joy during "Sweet Sweet Spirit") was the special introduction. I really hope that will be included in the DVD, but I'm afraid it won't. It was fabulous - all kinds of info, some of which I had not heard before, all kinds of interviews and background info. And, I have to say. Priscilla looked better than I've seen her look in years! Much softer and prettier. There's a lot with her, and with Jerry Shilling.

When the movie ended, nobody got up from seats. Everyone just sat there for a while and meditated on it. It was an amazing feeling for that to happen. A few minutes after the theatre screen turned off, everyone shouted and clapped. It was a kind touch that the lights did not come on bright as you would think in a theatre. It was really nice."

Well the unseen footage turned out to be a "making of EOT". Absolutely nothing new just Pris, Jerry and Andrew Solt talking about the movie. The theatre was packed and the evening started with Elvis trivia on the screen with some nice photos of EP on stage. The sound in the making of EOT was great as they used snippets from the film; The quality of the film I think was better but that quickly changed when the movie started. A blurb came up about maintaining the original aspect ratio and it was formatted to fit the screen, which meant they only used about 60 percent of the huge screen. I saw and heard no improvement at all in the picture and sound during the movie. It was very disappointing. I hope and pray the BD will be much better.

No, kyllähän tuohon laatuun vaikuttaa monikin seikka, eniten tietysti se, että oliko kyseessä DVD-, digitaalinen- vai filmilevityskopio sekä tietysti kyseisen teatterin tekniikka. Kyllähän nyt sokeakin näkee EOT-sivuilla olevista klipeistä, että laatu on valovuosia sitä edellä, mitä aikaisemmat EOT-DVD:t ovat tarjonneet.

Kovin moni FECC:llä, jotka näkivät leffan teatterissa, olivat pettyneita kuvaan ja ääneen (ainakin volyymin tasoon). Vaikuttaisi siltä, että kuvalähteenä on ollut DVD. Yllättävää kuitenkin, kun kyllä leffateatteriesitykseltä odottaisi kunnon kuvaa ja ääntä. Nyt ei harmita yhtään, ettei Suomessa näytetä isolla kankaalla. Kunnon filmiltä nähtävä on elämyksenä aivan omaa luokkaansa. Sen huomasi GI Bluesiakin katsoessa isolta kankaalta, vaikka nuhjuinen kopio olikin. Värit ja syvyys olivat kuitenkin aivan omaa luokkaansa.

Incidentally, I knew we were watching a DVD because as Jerry Schilling introduced the film, the screen behind him was showing how the player was set to PAUSE.

En usko DVD/BD julkaisun kuvan tai äänen laadussa on mitään vikaa. Ehkä kyse on vain siitä, että leffateatterin vehkeitä ei oltu kalibroitu oikein DVD/BD:tä varten.

Sen huomasi GI Bluesiakin katsoessa isolta kankaalta, vaikka nuhjuinen kopio olikin. Värit ja syvyys olivat kuitenkin aivan omaa luokkaansa.

Jaa sinä kipaisit katsomassa sen siellä Orionissa?
Saisivat laittaa kyllä EOT:n alkuperäisen version pyörimään siellä, Johnny B. Goodeineen ja rahinoineen.

Niinhän se on, että elokuvateatterit myyvät elämyksiä ja jos sitä ei pystytä tarjoamaan, niin sitten on parempi olla tarjoamatta yhtään mitään - viitaten siis tähän EOT-touhuun, en G.I. Bluesiin, koska kyseessä on puoli-ilmainen ja harvinaislaatuinen näytös, jota katsomaan mentäessä jokainen varmasti tiesi, että esityskopio on arkiston kätköistä eikä suoraan Paramountin pääkonttorin kassaholvista
